The Hypocrites' "Threepenny Opera" is a mixed bag. On the one hand, it features a fearless cast and some really intensely inventive staging. For instance, much of the audience is seated at two large oddly shaped tables, like some warped cabaret (or classroom?). But on the other hand, not only do some cast members have limited musical theater experience, the acoustics in the cavernous Steppenwolf Garage space is horrendous. Additionally, like many Hypocrites' past shows, this one has a frustratingly random and unfocused. However, the sheer force and audacity of Sean Graney's production is undeniable and that's what sticks to mind.Rating: **1/2 (out of *****)
