Before "Carmen", Bizet composed the tuneful "The Pearl Fishers" at the age of 24. Lyric Opera's production exudes a stately exoticism that is seductively transporting, even with the flimsy, melodramatic storyline. However, a bit more passion would have better served the production, which is handsomely designed and costumed. Eric Cutler and Nathan Gunn make an attractive pair and nail their "friendship" duet without overselling it (a compliment). But compared along side "Manon", this one's pure fluff.Rating: *** (out of *****)
